Programs

The Hagersville Skating Club offers three main programs, which are further subdivided into levels.

CanSkate, CanPowerSkate, and STARskate, which are described below.

CanSkate

CanSkate is SkateCanada`s flagship program and is one of the most sought-after skating programs in Canada. It has been developed over time using feedback from coaches, sport science and Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) experts. The focus is to master strong basic skills in a progressive manner and develop the speed, strength and flexibility needed for all ice sports – hockey, ringette, and figure skating. The skater to coach ratio is low (10:1 or less) in order to ensure individual attention and continuous advancement through the program. There are six stages of skating skills development, plus an introductory level called Pre-CanSkate. Skaters progress through these stages at their own rate, and advance to the next stage upon completion of the previous one. Ages 3+

PrePower

PrePower is part of the CanSkate program, where the beginner skaters are learning the first skating skills that are needed for hockey and ringette.

CanPowerSkate

CanPowerSkate is a Skate Canada program that has been designed to enhance the skating skills needed for both hockey and ringette players in the Learn to Train stage of development.

STARskate

STARskate is our figure Skating programs that is  for skaters who have completed  CanSkate and want to continue to learn new and more complex skating elements. Our programs follow the program structure offered by Skate Canada nationally, and vary from recreational skating to Competitive Figure Skating on the provincial stage.  We divide our STARskaters into groups, depending on their age and STARskate level.

PreSTAR

The PreSTAR program is designed for CanSkate skaters who are ready to move on to more advanced Figure Skating skills, but are not ready to move into the StarSkate program.  In a 50 minute session, skaters will work with a coach for 30 minutes and a PA for 20 minutes in a small group setting, to learn preliminary skills and guide them towards the StarSkate program.

The PreSTAR program can also be combined with CanSkate session, or a 1 hour Junior session for those who would benefit from more ice time.  PreSTAR + CanSkate would be ideal for the new PreSTAR skaters, and PreSTAR + Junior would be for a 2nd year PreSTAR preparing to move into Junior.

Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund Recipient

Youth sports organizations were greatly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.  In the spring of 2020, all organized youth sports were halted in efforts to keep our youth safe.  In efforts to re-open safely, many new restrictions were put in place.  These restrictions reduced ice time and number of participants.

Canadian Tire has been a great support to youth sports organizations across Canada.  Through their Jumpstart program, they offer individual support for families that cannot afford the full costs of registrations and equipment.  For years, families in need could apply for individual and confidential support.  Our own club have had members supported by the Jumpstart program.

In the fall of 2020, Canadian Tire expanded the Jumpstart funding, and entire organizations could apply for grants through the Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund.

The Hagersville Skating Club was fortunate to receive a $10 000.00 grant from the Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund.  This grant was put toward keeping our fees at a pre-pandemic rate, despite our lower membership due to the pandemic and number restrictions.  We were also able to purchase items necessary for the change in program delivery.

We would like to thank Canadian Tire for their support of youth organized sports!
